Is Vladislav Tretiak the Greatest Goalie of All Time?

The induction of Vladislav Tretiak into the Hockey Hall of Fame officially made the Hockey Hall of Fame an international hall of fame, not just an NHL-focused North American hockey hall of fame.

So that’s an area of controversy for some, but if the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto wants to be the Hockey Hall of Fame of the World, it’s a step that needed to be taken.

So where does Tretiak rank? How do we compare him to NHL goalies when Soviet League goalie stats are even worse than Soviet League skater stats?

What do we do with the very notable fact that Tretiak’s GAA (not save percentage) increased drastically every time he played against NHL competition in international tournaments?

Listen to us attempt to talk about Vladislav Tretiak’s Hall of Fame case here:

Does Peter Stastny Belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Peter Stastny is a legend; one of the NHL’s first European-trained stars and in the Top 10 All Time in both APG and PPG.

But he was never close to the best player in league – he has one Top 5 Hart finish in his entire career – and he was never a star in best-on-best international competition.

So, does he deserve his reputation as one of the great players of the 1980s?

Does Viacheslav Fetisov Belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Festisov is perhaps the greatest Russian defender of all time. (The GRDOAT?) But his NHL career was past his prime.

Does he belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Listen to us discuss his case here:

Does Valeri Kharlamov Belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Valeri Kharlamoov never played in the NHL.

This website is about players who have played in the NHL, or players who played in the forerunners of the NHL.

But Kharlamov was inducted, in great part due scaring Canada at the ’72 Summit Series. (Kharlamov also died very young.)

So, does he belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Listen to us try to talk about this case here:

Does Peter Bondra Belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Brooke Novak, CC BY-SA 2.5 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5, via Wikimedia Commons

Peter Brondra is one of the best Slovak players of all time and scored 500 goals at a time it was pretty hard to do so. Had the Rocket Richard Trophy existed he would have won it twice.

So, does he belong in the Hall of Fame? Listen to us talk about his case here:

Does Igor Larionov Belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

One of the Russian Five, Larionov has had team success wherever he’s gone. But his individual success only ever occurred outside of the NHL. Does he belong?

Does Jere Lehtinen Belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

by Resolute [CC BY-SA 3.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0)]

It might seem like a silly question. However, as if this writing, Jere Lehtinen is the only eligible player with at least three Selke trophies not in the Hall of Fame. (If Datsyuk doesn’t get in once he’s eligible, there will be two.)

In this episode we discuss Lehtinen’s case in light of Guy Carbonneau’s induction in 2019.

Listen to us talk about Jere Lehtinen here:

Does Henrik Zetterberg Belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Before we recorded this episode, one of us was pretty convince he did belong and the other was skeptical. Somehow, talking about his case, we both changed our minds!

Zetterberg was undoubtedly one of the best two-way forwards of his era; overshadowed in awards voting by his teammate, he actually performed better in the playoffs than Datsyuk.

So does he belong?

Does Luc Robitaille Belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Of course the real question is, “is Luc Robitaille the Greatest Left Wing of All Time?” That’s the real question because, of all left-shooting Left Wings in NHL history, Robitaille is first in both goals and points.

Does Pat Verbeek Belong in the Hockey Hall of Fame?

The “Little Ball of Hate” scored 500 goals and racked up nearly 3,000 penalty minutes. But otherwise, he doesn’t have much of a case to join the Hall of Fame, it would seem. So why did we talk about him?
